Chapter 21

I shifted into drive and accelerated down the road, leaving the warehouse that sheltered the hidden entrance to the Underground in my rear-view mirror. We still had three hours before sunrise. Worst case scenario, I could take cover in the coffin in the back of my trusty hearse and Ramon could hang out until the sun set again. I hoped it wouldn’t take that long, but when it comes to teaching someone to use magic, a lot depended on one’s natural inclinations. Most people can cast magic, to a degree, few can do it well, and even fewer were strong enough to manage it with one lesson. I was banking on this strange power within Ramon giving him an edge. There was no telling, given the mysteries surrounding his magic, if we’d pull it off or not. Still, we had to try.

Ramon chuckled, glancing over his shoulder at the coffin I kept in the back. “You know, that coffin brings back a lot of memories. All those times in New Orleans when I’d lost control. How many times did you throw me in that coffin to take me home again after you’d staked me?”

I smirked. “More times than I can count. You might not be a vampire at the moment, but if you don’t behave, I might just have to stake you again for old times’ sake.”

“Promises, promises,” he muttered under his breath, though I could tell he was fighting back a smile. “Though I suspect, this time, staking me would be more... permanent.”

“All the more reason to stay on your best behavior!” I chuckled.

“Where are we going, anyway?

“Willie’s forest, near the convergence. We need to forge you a wand, and since the trees there are already attuned to faerie magic, it’s the best option. We don’t know much about the magic inside of you, it’s probably a combination of celestial and faerie power, but this will have to do.”

“Wait, why do I need a wand?” Ramon asked, his brows furrowed in confusion.

“Because it will allow you to focus your power. If I incant the spell necessary into the wand, it will shape your magic accordingly. There’s no way to ensure that the magic you cast will empower a devil’s trap unless your wand is properly attuned to the appropriate spell.”

When we arrived at the edge of the forest, I found a beaten path on the side of a gravel road and parked the hearse. We stepped out of the car and I locked it behind us. We headed into the woods. Without a clear trail, we made our own, pushing aside stray thicket and stomping over weeds.

The air was thick with magic that vibrated through my bones. Luminous sentinel wards floated overhead, their eerie glows casting flickering patterns on the moss-covered ground.

“What are those?” Ramon asked.

“Willie’s sentinels. He uses them to keep an eye on the forest. Think of them as faerie security cameras. I suspect he’ll find us sooner or later and, frankly, we could use his help.
